Lost land of the Big Apple: Empty sidewalks, swims in the sun and a quiet date in Central Park feature in evocative photo from 1930s’ New York

Pictures from a tour guide for New York City are the closest people can now come to actually travelling back in time to the Gotham of yore.

The images show a different Manhattan from the ones that is etched in the collective imagination, as the technological advancements that occurred throughout the 20th century helped to shape New York into the city it is today.
