And we shall die like gentlemen… Captain Scott’s moving farewell letter sold for £163,000

A farewell letter written by Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Scott only days before his death sold for £163,250 at auction yesterday.

With moving dignity, he told the expedition’s treasurer, Sir Edgar Speyer: ‘We have been to the Pole and we shall die like gentlemen.’

The four-page letter was scribbled in pencil on thin notepaper more than a century ago, as Scott and his men trekked back from the South Pole after the heartbreaking discovery that Norwegian Roald Amundsen had reached it first. for more click here
