So why are pubs called the Cat & Fiddle? A new book taps into the intriguing history of British pubs

John Major talked of warm beer — along with cricket, green suburbs and dog lovers — in a much-mocked 1993 speech on the characteristics that defined Britain. How odd that he omitted pubs from the list.

He may have thought his reference to warm beer had it covered, of course, or perhaps he knew that the institution of the pub, the ideal pub, was under threat even then. for more click here
