Genealogy 101: The New York State Census

Colonial records are scattered at best but once you get into the 1800s more and more records are available for research. In addition to the Federal Census being taken every ten years, the New York State census was taken every ten years from 1825 to 1875. This is a great resource for anyone researching New York State in this time frame because, coupled with the Federal Census, it allows the researcher the ability to narrow down results in five-year increments rather than ten. As in the Federal Census however, only the name of the head of household is listed from 1825 to 1845. for more click here
