Gathering draws 140 clans to Royal Mile

The 19th Lord Sempill doesn’t fail to see the irony in his efforts to bring together the Highland clans of Scotland next year.

He is perfectly aware that his ancestor, the 12th Lord Sempill, played a key role in routing the clans at the Battle of Culloden in 1745, which paved the way for the end of the Scots clan tradition.

Jamie Sempill said his is not a mission of atonement. Many clansmen fought on the king’s side in that conflict, he said, and the end of the clan system has to be viewed as a matter of “perspective.” He sees the Gathering 2009 in Edinburgh next July as a rare chance to celebrate Highland culture — to revel in all things Scots, with people from all over the globe. for more click here
