Bowie Family Biography

John Bowie, the first of his name in the annals of Maryland, came from Scotland, according to family tradition, about the year 1705-06, at the invitation of his maternal uncle, John Smith, who preceding him many years had settled on the Patuxent river, a few miles above the present village of Nottingham. John Bowie settled in what was then Calvert, now Prince Georges county, Maryland. It was one of the most fertile portions of the state, the principal industry being the raising and shipment of tobacco by means of slave labor. for more click here
