African slaves made up a significant proportion of the population in most of the British colonies in the West Indies. Before 1698 the British slave trade was monopolised by the Company of Royal Adventurers of England Trading in Africa, later the Royal Africa Company. After this date the company lost its monopoly and other slaving companies were established. The company’s records are held at the National Archives in series T 70. for more click here
