NAJAF, Iraq — The world’s largest cemetery with five million graves, is where Shiites from around the world aspire to be buried because of its proximity to the Imam Ali Shrine, Iraq’s holiest Shiite site.

Ohlsdorf Cemetery in Hamburg, Germany is the largest cemetery, covering an area of 400 ha (990 acres), with 982,117 burials and 413,589 cremations (figures ending 1996). It has been in continuous use since 1877.

The world’s largest cemetery: Auschwitz-Birkenau Nazi concentration camp, where 1.6 million people were killed.
