Gates’ book sparks genealogy searches

LEXINGTON, Mass. — In 1783, after the rebellious colonists won the Revolutionary War, 3,000 African-Americans who had fled slavery to aid the British in exchange for freedom gathered at the docks of New York and boarded ships for Nova Scotia.
