Jack and Sophie top names chart

Jack and Sophie head up the list of the most popular baby names for 2006, published today by the Registrar General.

Jack has returned to the top spot after three years in second place, just pushing last year’s winner, Lewis, into second place. Callum remained in third place, with Ryan at fourth and James at fifth swapping places.

For the second year in a row, Sophie is the most popular name for girls with Emma remaining in second place. Erin, Katie and Lucy all moved up a few places to third, fourth and fifth respectively.

The highest climbers in the 2006 baby name charts were Luca for boys and Imogen for girls.

The top 50 boys’ names accounted for just over half of all boys’ names registered and the top 50 girls’ names accounted for 45 per cent of the registrations.

The Most Popular Names in Scotland, 2006
Duncan Macniven, Registrar General for Scotland, said:

“As always, the list of Scotland’s favourite baby names is very interesting. Around 26,500 boys and 25,300 girls names have been registered. More than 6,000 different names were chosen this year and around 1,600 boys and 2,200 girls were given unique names.

“There is a change at the top for boys, Jack just pipping Lewis, but there are no new entrants to the top ten. However, there are two new entrants to the top 20 – Aaron (up 8 places to 13th) and Logan (up 8 places to 15th). Lower down the top 100 there have been large jumps for Robbie (up 16 places to 36th), Charlie (up 15 places to 34th), Lucas (up 19 places to 64th) and Shaun (up 23 places to 69th). The biggest rise was seen by Luca, a new entrant to the top 100 (up 62 places to 90th). Notable reductions in popularity include Euan (down 14 places to 43rd), Christopher (down 11 places to 55th) and Jake (down 11 places to 56th).

“For girls, Sophie remains at the top, with Olivia (up 3 places to 9th) being the only new entrant to the top ten. There are three new entrants to the top twenty, Grace (up 14 places to 14th), Isla (up 6 places to joint 19th) and Sarah (up 3 places to joint 19th). Names making significant advances in the top 100 include Ava (up 24 places to 28th), Zara (up 36 places to 59th), Georgia (up 22 places to 71st), Poppy (up 35 places to 74th) and Mya (up 28 places to 81st). The biggest rise was seen by Imogen (up 54 places to 100th). Significant falls were registered for Eve (down 15 places to 42nd), Kaitlyn (down 27 places to 100th), Alisha (down 20 places to 93rd) and Demi (down 16 places to 87th).”
