Carlisle most historic move

FROM keeping pigs off city streets to facing a firing squad if you harboured a Scotsman, Carlisle’s Dormont Book of 1561 makes fascinating reading.

The Book – one of the many treasures hidden behind Carlisle Castle’s walls – lists the rules governing life in the city, everything from not dumping dead animals down the city well to how long you can leave a dunghill outside your front door (eight days). for more click here
