SeaBritain

Birmingham City Archives is home to many archive collections which can be explored to enrich our knowledge of Britain’s sea and coast.

Birmingham is over a hundred miles from the sea, but as a major centre for metal manufacturing, engineering and trade, many links were established with coast and ocean, shipping and the navy. Chance has brought many archives to rest in Birmingham which reflect their creators’ interests or business activities with the sea. In addition, the lure of the sea as a place for health and then for holidays has resulted in personal archives – letters, diaries and photographs – recording the city dweller’s experience at the seaside. for more click here
