The name ‘Ballymoney’ comes from two Gaelic words meaning either “the town in the shrubbery†or “the town in the bogâ€. The second meaning is probably more accurate as Ballymoney lies close to the Garry Bog which was the second largest in Ireland and remains an important source of fuel for Ballymoney. The town is also known as the “Capital of the Route†a title dating back to the third century when a chieftain called Cairbre Riada conquered a vaste amount of the land of Northern Antrim.
