Redevelopment at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow

.The official opening of the redeveloped reading room and rare books and archives store at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (RCPSG) took place on March 19th 2004. The redevelopment has resulted in a new air-conditioned and humidity-controlled storage room with enough space for accruals for several years. There were inevitable compromises in reconciling the British Standard on archival storage conditions (BS:5454) with fire-proofing and listed building status, but the new storage area provides easy access to the collections, which are now housed together rather than in separate parts of the building.

Part of the library reading room has been turned into a search room area where readers can consult archives and rare books under supervision – something that was lacking before. The redeveloped library reading room also hosts a computer suite with access to the internet together with the library catalogue and details of the archive collections. The archive lists and information on the medical instrument collection are being converted into the archive and museum documentation system, CALM, and will soon be available in this fully-searchable format as well as in the traditional bound catalogue. Details of the archive collections are available on the College website (see the Directory for contact details) and also on SCAN’s Online Catalogue. Any intending visitors should contact the College’s archivist, Carol Parry, at, telephone number 0141 2273234.
