The Highland Council

The Highland Council Archive and The North Highland Archive are responsible for locating, preserving and making accessible documents and other records relating to the history of the Highlands.

The Archive Service holds and preserves the official records of not only The Highland Council, but those which the Council inherited from The Highland Regional Council and District Councils, plus the five Counties which preceded the Regional Council: Caithness, Sutherland, Ross and Cromarty, Inverness-shire, and Nairnshire. In addition it is responsible for the records of 13 Burghs within the Highlands.

The Archive Service also provides accommodation for archives derived from private individuals, estates, solicitors, businesses, and organisations from within the Highlands, considered of historic interest and worthy of permanent preservation.. These private records are often held on indefinite loan and remain the property of the person or institution depositing them.
