Shipping and arrival records NSW

This Archives in Brief (AIB) highlights the key records held by State Records relating to passengers arriving in New South Wales, 1788–1922, and lists the available indexes. While most of the records relate to passengers disembarking in Sydney, records of arrivals in other ports, held by State Records, are also included.

For further information

Researchers should consult Archives Investigator and the Concise Guide as well as the Guide to Shipping and Free Passenger Records (Shipping Guide), which is available for use in the reading rooms, and also as part of the Archives Resources Kit. This AIB can be used in conjunction with Archives in Brief No. 24.

Online immigration indexes

A collection of indexes to assisted immigrants is available on the State Records Web site at http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/indexes/immigration/introduction.htm. These indexes are listed below under Online indexes to assisted immigrants. Online indexes, such as the Index to the Colonial Secretary’s papers, 1788–1825, may also be of interest when researching immigrant arrivals. The website Ships and Mariners in Australian Waters, http://mariners.records.nsw.gov.au/ should be consulted for unassisted passengers and crew arrivals in the 1870’s. Our online indexes are discussed in more detail below.
