Strange Ideas of how Highlanders dressed

Our ideas of how Highlanders looked and dressed are in the main 19th century inventions coloured by the pen of Sir Walter Scot.

To understand what I mean compare the two pictures below. The first one is of Lord George Murray in his campaign uniform. This picture was probably done around 1745/46

The print below was done by Robert McNair the Victorian Historical Painter and claims to show a Clan Ranald Macdonald but the tartan would have been unknown to any member of the Clan Donald. The sporran is just nonsense and a Victorian absurdity. However it is from this we get our mental image of the Highlander to the present day
