Trade Unions and Merchant Seamen

The growth of the trade union movement amongst merchant seaman can help a family researcher further embellish the lives of their merchantman ancestors.

For instance the records may well contain records of payment of dues, roles as a Union official, reciept of relief from the union.

One of the best sources for information is the University of Warwick Modern Records Centre which holds the records of the National Union of Seamen (from 1911) and some of the branch records of the British Seafarers Union (from 1915)
