Ranks in the British Army

Many family historians will have come across military personnel within their family. Within the British army the following ranks hold

Commissioned Officer
Feild Marshal
General
Lieutenant General
Major General
Brigadier
Colonel
Lieutenant Colonel
Major
Captain
Lieutenant
Second Lieutenant

Non Commissioned officers and other ranks
Warrant officer first class
Warrant Officer Second Class
Sergeant Major
Staff Sargeant
Sergeant
Corporal
Lance Corporal
Private

It should be noted that some regiments have given different names to various ranks for example a Private in the Royal Engineers is refered to as a Sapper
